Social responsibility
At the beginning of 2012, Velours International partnered with one of the leading sporting goods retailers to develop a corporate social responsibility department.
| OUR MISSION
This company was facing a negative public image due to its proximity to 23 favelas located in the Raposo Tavares and Rio Pequeno neighborhoods of São Paulo, where several of its stores were established.
Following six months of work, during which we established close dialogue with leaders from various communities, we built strong ties with the head of Vila Nova Esperança, a disadvantaged community that emerged in the late 1960s in the southwestern area of São Paulo. Now pacified, the community is home to approximately 500 families and continues to face a lack of essential resources such as basic sanitation, electricity regularization, and waste collection, while also dealing with eviction pressures. Despite being an association with limited structure and funding challenges, it carried ambitious projects.
With the goal of becoming Brazil’s first “sustainable” community, Vila Nova Esperança has taken part in several large-scale environmental initiatives.
In 2015, Velours International, through a fundraising campaign, financed and carried out the construction of a children’s park in Vila Nova Esperança. This decision came naturally, as more than 600 children live in the favela without access to dedicated recreational spaces.
The park is designed to serve as a gathering place while also acting as a platform to raise awareness of environmental issues, recycling, and sustainable development.
To raise the funds required for the construction of the park, we launched a crowdfunding campaign with the support of two partners:
GoodPlanet Foundation
The French GoodPlanet Foundation played a key role in bringing the project to life and in fulfilling the dreams of the community’s children. Founded in 2005, GoodPlanet is an internationally recognized NGO committed to sustainable development and environmental preservation projects.
LAO Engenharia
The park was designed under the supervision of LAO Engenharia, a construction company committed to sustainable development. All materials used in the construction are certified as environmentally responsible.
| SINCE 2016: A SUSTAINABLE PARTNERSHIP
Waste management is one of the community’s main challenges. The lack of adequate public infrastructure has led to waste being discarded in the streets, creating unsanitary conditions. Velours International, in partnership with the company Tecnisa, supplied dozens of new waste bins and ensured their installation at strategic points throughout the community, resolving within a few months a waste collection issue that had persisted for years.
Velours continues its commitment to the community through concrete actions, such as donations to support repair work and the acquisition of technological equipment. In addition, the company extends its social impact through initiatives in other regions, notably through its ongoing support of the Arca do Saber association, reaffirming its commitment to Brazilian civil society.
